Innefective Websites

You have a great looking website. It contains all the details about your products or services. The site has a prominent contact form. You have invested in driving traffic to your site. Though for some reason, your site is not converting visitors into sales or leads!

If you don’t have a way of capturing leads in WordPress, you rely solely on the visitor reaching out to you. Sometimes that will happen, more often than not it doesn’t. Your website is not working to its maximum potential in generating new leads for you.

You can be sure that your competitors know how to capture leads in WordPress. So let us explore how to capture leads in WordPress

How to capture leads in WordPress?

There are essentially two stages to capturing leads in WordPress;

  • Giving the visitor a reason to want to exchange contact details with you via a form, such as giving away a useful piece of content.
  • Capturing the users contact information such as an email address and imoprting into a marketing platform, such as MailChimp.

Unless you are a brand with a big reputation merely asking for their email address is rarely enough. You need to incentivise the visitor to sign up.

If your website is full of engaging content (if it’s not it should be!), then you can leverage that content in exchange for the visitor’s contact details. For example, you may have written an article that the visitor finds useful. You offer a PDF summary as a download. In exchange, you ask for their contact details so that you can contact them in future with relevant information. This was a simple transaction that is beneficial to both of you.

Lead Capture Plugins

One of the most effective ways to capture leads in wordpress is to use an email opt-in and lead generation plugin. We like to use Bloom, or Optinmonster in conjunction with an email marketing platform, such as MailChimp (our preferred option). MailChimp stores the captured information in a lost, which you can then use to send out relevant informaiton, such as a newsletter.

Once installed, the plugin offers different styles of pop-up boxes that ‘pop-up’ after a specified event. For example, if a user clicks a link or scrolls down a page a certain amount. The pop-up box provides the reader with a chance to exchange their contact details for a download or other information. The pop-up then sends the contact information to your email marketing platform. You are now ready to open a communication channel with your subscriber.

Content is King

A few tips to consider when leveraging content;

  • Ensure your free download is highly relevant to your blog post, a summary can sometimes be enough.
  • Signup forms should be clear and easy to read and don’t require too much information to complete.
  • Your free download should be delivered as soon as somebody signs up.
  • Make sure you thank them!
  • Follow up with two/three emails in the first week with more information about you and your business.
  • Ask your new subscriber questions about what they are looking for in your automated emails

Pitfalls

It can be very tempting to place lead capturing pop-ups all over your website but be careful. We have all seen those sites that seem to show pop-ups with every scroll or click and when you leave the site. While they all have a place and can be useful, always think of the visitor’s overall experience. You wouldn’t want to annoy them so much that they make a point of not revisiting your site, regardless of the quality of your content.

Sum up

Make sure you place the lead capturing forms in the right places. On specific posts or pages and they can be a very effective way of capturing leads, improving conversions and opening a direct communications channel with your visitors.
